Considering all the information that’s readily available to you online, and recourses at your fingertips from family and friends who have successfully got their kids to sleep, why would you hire a stranger to come into your home and get your child sleeping through the night?

I’ve never heard this question asked in exactly those terms, but I know it’s a thought many parents have when they’re considering getting some professional help with their little person’s sleep habits.
And it’s a valid question! After all, your mother managed to get you to sleep at some point and you probably have friends whose kids are superstar sleepers, so they should have some answers for you, right?
Well, yes they might! But then again, they might not.
And let me be the first to say, if you have someone in your life that can help you in this situation, I’m not the least bit offended if you want to ask them for help instead of calling a consultant. We’re all trying to save money where we can, so if you can remedy the problem without spending cash, I’m all for that option!
Most of the time though, parents who have tried that route have found it wasn’t successful and there are dozens of reasons why that might happen.
The biggest reason why the solutions that work for one parent don’t work for another is simple. They’re not dealing with the same baby.
Sleep is a complicated issue and there’s rarely one single thing that can remedy the situation overnight.
Some babies rely heavily on a sleep prop. Others can’t sleep in a room that’s too warm or too cold. Some babies may not be getting enough daytime sleep, whilst others may be overtired. This baby may have developed an association between feeding and falling asleep, while that baby may be ready to drop their second daytime nap.
It could be any combination of the above or many other challenges that babies might experience.
What further adds to the challenge is the fact that most solutions don’t work overnight. So parents may start a solution that could potentially help baby start sleeping through the night, but abandon it before it really starts to take effect due to some heavy protesting on baby’s part.
To cut a long story short, sleep is a complicated issue and there’s rarely one single thing that can remedy the situation overnight.
A professional sleep consultant can work with you to develop a customised plan for your child that addresses individual issues and has the experience and training to recognise which problems result in specific symptoms.
They can also give you the encouragement you need to follow through on the plan until it starts to work and provide that much needed support.
It’s similar to hiring a personal trainer. You could just get some dumbbells and watch some YouTube videos to get fit, so why pay someone to guide you along?
Well, because they can help to keep you motivated, they are able to give you solid advice based on education and experience, and they know how to respond to any issues that might arise when it comes to your specific situation.
So, when it comes to baby’s sleep, I hope for everyone that they find success on their own and encounter as little problems as possible. However, if this is not happening for you a professional sleep consultant has the support and answers you need.
